Steel Gutters: Care and Maintenance Tips
Steel gutters are durable but not maintenance free. Checking them a few times every year will alert you to any problems while they are still easy to repair. If you have had a storm with a lot of wind then check them after the storm as well.
Cleaning
Keeping gutters clean is the main way to extend their life and keep them channeling the rainwater properly. If gutters are not cleaned regularly, leaves and other material can jam up the system. The collected water can cause leaking in the joints and even rusting. Remove all of the debris in the troughs and check the downspouts to be sure they are clear.
Hangers
While you are up on the ladder check to see that all of the hangers holding the gutters onto the house are secure. If one has come loose take it out and install another hanger. If the damaged hanger was nailed in consider using a screwed-in type to hold it more securely.
Joints
Check the joints where the troughs are connected together along with any elbow joints. Be sure they are not leaking or corroded. Seal any joints with caulk. You can repair a small hole with roofing cement.
You will be glad you took the time to take care of the gutters the next time you see rain clouds and know that the gutters will do their job.
