by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Main body fabric
  • Pockets fabric
  • Fabric pocket lining
  • Fabric fusing web
  • Wooden dowels
  • Sewing Machine
  • Needles and threads
  • Scissors
  • Measuring Tape
  • Iron and iron board

A smart, stylish way to organize your toiletries is to put them in a bathroom caddy. Your shower essentials will be within reach in this customized cloth with pockets. Hung anywhere you wish, including the wall, door or on the shower curtain rod, it is of great utility and practicality.

With a little sewing know-how, it is fairly easy to make one that matches with your bathroom style and colors. Follow these easy steps:

Step 1 – Choosing your Fabric

When it comes to making a customized item to match your decor, it is very important to think what type of colors or style you want it to be in. Once you find your material, calculate the amount you need. Purchase a good quality material since a bathroom caddy will be used frequently by all the members of family. It has to withstand a lot of handling and possible spills from the objects stored inside.

Step 2 – The Main Body

If you don’t have already the main body, you will need to start from scratch. Measure and cut your main body fabric in the desired size. Stitch a ½-inch hem on the sides. Turn under 1 ½ inches at the top and the bottom to make casings and stitch them. Secure your stitching by sewing all sides with the sewing machine.

Step 3 – Cutting the Pockets

Once you have the main body, determine how many pockets you will need and what sizes they ought to be. Don’t forget, the more the merrier. Be practical and remember to add some small ones for little toiletries you want to store. For guidance you can cut pieces of paper in your projected pocket sizes and place them on the main body to see how they look. Once satisfied, cut the pockets material in these measurements and amounts.

Step 4 – Lining and Fusing

Cut the pocket lining fabric and fusing web in the size of each pocket. Lay the pocket lining fabric facing down on the ironing board. Then put the fabric fusing web on top of it. Facing up, lay the pocket fabric on top of them. Press the three layers together and fuse according to the instructions on the fabric fusing package. Repeat for all pockets.

Step 5 – Stitching the Pockets

Before you start stitching the pockets on your caddy, turn ½ inch under the edges of the pockets. Press firmly and with a straight machine stitch sew the top flap down. Place all pockets on the main body in the exact placement you want. Use the sewing machine to go around three sides of each pocket. Make a backstitch at the tops of the pockets. Insert the wooden dowels in the casing at the top and bottom.

As you can see, this project is not complicated. You will be relieved to have all those pockets so that you may put your bathroom toiletries in one place and will no longer be looking all over for them when you need them.
