Stroke risk is the list of factors that contribute to stroke. Stroke risk factors are well documented, and largely preventable, with diet, exercise and newer cholesterol lowering drugs that have been developed. Some stroke risk factors, however, are hereditary, and less able to be affected.
Stroke Risk Factors
Age is the prime stroke risk factor which cannot be changed. After age 55, the chances of having a stroke doubles. Family history is another stroke risk factor. If strokes run in the family, it may raise your risk of having a stroke.
Strokes are more common in men than in women. A prior stroke is a high stroke risk factor.
High blood pressure, cigarette smoking, diabetes and artery disease are all stroke risk factors that can be treated to some extent. Arterial fibrillation is a heart rhythm disorder that can cause a stroke, and is a high stroke risk factor. Other forms of heart disease also contribute to a person’s having a high stroke risk factor.
