Stroke Therapy

by DoItYourself Staff

Stroke therapy starts as soon as the patient is able to begin in the hospital.   If a patient is stable, then the stroke therapy will start within two days or so of the stroke.

How the brain cells are damaged by a stroke and how they recover isn’t well known by the medical establishment. Different regions of the brain might ‘take over’ for the areas affected by the stroke. Stroke therapy is an inexact science, and some patients react much better than others.

Early Recovery in Stroke Therapy

Only ten percent of stroke survivors completely recover from a stroke. Twenty five percent recovery with minor difficulties. Forty percent experience moderate to severe impairments, and ten percent will require care in a nursing home or care facility.

Physical therapy is employed as the primary means of stroke therapy. The stroke therapy patient re-learns to move his or her body and limbs. Stroke therapy deals with issues as simple as getting in and out of bed, washing, dressing, and so on. Speech therapy is another kind of stroke therapy, where the patient re-learns vocal patterns and mechanics of speech.
