Strong winds can damage your hedgerow by snapping branches, stripping leaves, and ruining its appearance. When strong winds damage your hedge row, the following tips can help you repair those damages and prevent them in the future.
Saving Your Hedge Row with Pruning
Prune broken limbs caused by the strong winds as soon as possible. Wait to prune any branches that are bending or hanging down because they may return to normal the next day. Properly cut the branch by making a cut on the underside of the branch about 6 to 12 inches away from the trunk. Make a second cut on top of the branch one inch away from the initial cut. The branch will fall and a final cut is made before the branch collar.
Using The Correct Tools
Use small pruning shears for branches that are ½ inch. Long handled loppers are for cutting braches that are ½ inch to 1 ¼ inch. A pruning saw is necessary for any branches that are bigger than 1 ¼ inch.
Ways You Can Prevent Strong Wind Damage
A good watering before the winter will help keep your hedge row hydrated. During the winter, shovel excess snow around the base of the hedge row for added moisture. Setting up a snow fence is an easy way to create snow drifts around the hedgerow. Also, tenting the hedgerow with burlap will save it from damaging strong winds.
