Sturdy Attic Flooring Options
Attic flooring is a great do-it-yourself project and gives your attic the ability to be an efficient and sound storage or other use-able space. Before starting on your flooring project, be sure to consider the below guidelines and option for attic floor.
Add Insulation First
When starting your project the first thing is to add insulation as a base for the attic floor and to help regulate attic temperature. This is an important first step as it is essential in retaining heat and being a foundation for the floor you are deciding to build.
Options for Your Flooring
One option for your floor is a relatively new product called Attic Dek. This products is a hard plastic which interlocks using with wood screws. This is a great option because it is so durable and relatively easy to put together. Your local home improvement store should carry this product and employee can help you select the size you'll need for your attic.
Another option is to use chipboard for the flooring. Chipboard is less expensive the Attic Dek and is eco-friendly. However, it may not be as durable when it comes to heavier items you wish to store in your attic.
A less common, but still use-able option is to place sturdy throw rugs as the floor for your attic. This option may be better if you'd like your attic to be more of a living space then a storage space. Also keep in mind that the area should be stable and potential weaknesses should be tested when placing the rugs.
The most common attic flooring option is to use plywood. Other than Attic Dek, this will be your most durable option for the flooring. Like chipboard, be sure to measure the wood correctly so it will fit through the opening of your attic door.
