Stylish Mudroom Storage Ideas

by DoItYourself Staff

Many urban dwellers might not have a clue what mudroom storage is and how it functions. Bit if you grew up in an old house in northern climates or on a farm, you probably learned to appreciate the traditional mudroom where you could enter the house through a side or back door and hang your wet outerwear on hooks to dry while stashing your shoes and boots in cubby hole where you won't fall over them. Mudrooms preserve the house's formal entry, relegating all the wear and tear to a utility room in the back.

3 Mudroom Functions

Slipper or indoor footwear exchange. Shelving compartments designed for each individual family member where when entering, slippers or other inside footwear can be exchanged for muddy boots. Shelving can be designed aesthetically while being durable and water resistant.

Key deposit. Designing a key holder for placement in a mudroom is a great way to keep track of where they are if trained to use the holder effectively. The key holder can be designed to suit individual or family themes.

Sport equipment storage. Create a sports-oriented mudroom where returning athletes can shed a uniform, deposit equipment and shed any muddied clothing or other items before entering the main house. Create the mudroom by possibly adopting a locker room theme.

Creating a Mudroom

For homes that have garage-area entries, a mudroom can be created just at the entry to the rest of the house. This can act as a back entrance when inclement weather looms or when family members are in need of discarding muddied footwear and outer clothing. Make sure the mudroom area has a slip-resistant floor.
