Stylize Your Light Fixtures with Handmade Shades

by DoItYourself Staff

Changing your light fixtures is one of the easiest ways to change the look of a room. Since this can be a costly thing to do, consider simply creating a handmade shade for next to no money.

Use What You Have

Even if you hate the look of your current shades, you can still use them for the bare bones of your new ones. After all, it’s a lot easier to use the old ones for the skeleton than have to create brand new shades. Your old lamp shades fit the light fixtures so you will not have to worry about measuring it to make it fit.

Quick Fixes

By adding some fringe to your current shade, you can create a whole new look in little to no time. Simply glue the fringe around the base of the shade and the top and you have revitalized an old look.

You can also take fabric paint and add some design to your shade to spruce it up or wrap a lighter colored gauzy material around your shade can also give it a slightly different look.

A Whole New Look

However, if you don’t want to keep the old material because it is worn or darker than the new material, you can remove it and just work with the wire of the shade. You will need to attach the material to one of the wires with glue and then give it time to dry. Next, add glue to the other wires and tightly wrap the material around. Leave a bit of overlay where the material meets and trim neatly.

Add Some Stained Glass

Create a pattern that you like on a piece of paper and attach it to the inside of the shade. Using glass paint, color the lampshade according to your design. Once the paint has dried, you can add lead stripping to complete the stained glass look.
