Supply List for Your New Kitchen

by DoItYourself Staff

The supply list for your new kitchen depends on your budget. If you have a tight budget then you only have to get the basic kitchen supplies which are essential in every kitchen. If cooking is your passion then you have to outfit your new kitchen with all the latest kitchenware. Your kitchen supply list also depends on your preference like the type of food that you always cook and eat and how often you cook your own food.

Dishes

Purchase enough bowls, plates for dessert, plates for dining, as well as glasses and cups for everyone in your household and your occasional visitors. The rule of thumb when it comes to the number of dishes that you have is twice as much as the number of your household members. If you are living alone, have at least six extra dishes for your friends or visiting family members. Aside from the plates, you should also have a large bowl that can both serve as a salad bowl, a punch bowl or a serving bowl.

Pans and Pots

A frying pan is a must have in every kitchen around the world. Purchase a small frying pan if you are cooking for one and don’t expect guests often. If you are living with family members or sharing a pad with friends, get a large frying pan. The same also goes with the sauce pan and cooking pots. Include in your list a casserole pan and a baking dish that is made of glass or stainless steel. If you are an avid cook, a sauté pan along with a steamer is a must have. So as to be prepared for the occasional unexpected visit of friends and family members, having two sizes for your frying pan, sauce pan, sauté pan and cooking pots is a good rule to follow when outfitting your new kitchen.

Appliances

If you are a baking enthusiast, outfit your kitchen with an electric mixer. Kitchen appliances such as microwave, bread toaster, coffee maker and food processor are also essential for your new kitchen. If you can afford it, get an electric dishwasher, blender, counter top grill, rice cooker or a multi-cooker. Of course, you should also include in your list a good refrigerator or freezer that can accommodate all of your stored food.

Utensils

Purchase enough spoons, forks and knives equal to the number of dining plates you have. Aside from these, also include in you supply list a couple of cooking knives such as a paring knife and a large chef knife. If you love cooking your own food always, get a good set of knives at your local big box store. Also, get a vegetable peeler, a can opener, measuring cups and spoons along with a large wooden spoon for your new kitchen.

Pantry

For basic seasoning, include on your list salt, pepper, basil and oregano. You should also include Worcestershire sauce, teriyaki sauce, soy sauce along with garlic powder, vinegar, bouillon cubes, taco seasoning and stroganoff mix. Do not forget to stock you kitchen with rice, canned veggies, onions, potatoes, cheese, butter, sugar, olive oil and flour.
