With fall storms approaching, give a few thoughts now to surviving blackouts. First item: A flashlight with working batteries. Or get a rechargeable flashlight that actually lights if the power fails. Also, keep a cooler handy to throw perishables in (you just don't know how long your fridge will be out), along with ice from the trays in your freezer. Finally, always have a non-cordless phone around, since most cordless phones need electricity coming into the base unit to work.
