Suspended Ceiling

A suspended ceiling is a hung ceiling or dropped ceiling. It is also called a secondary ceiling, or a suspended ceiling. The suspended ceiling is widely used in modern construction, most often seen in offices and basements.

Advantages of a Suspended Ceiling

A suspended ceiling has a small amount of space directly above it. Between the suspended ceiling and the actual ceiling is this space which can be utilized for wiring, pipes, duct work and insulation.

The duct air returns are often put above suspended ceilings in office construction, as it hides the ductwork. This is an advantage because no holes or channels have to be cut into the existing ceiling to accommodate the duct work. The area above the suspended ceiling is called, in the trade, a plenum space.

A suspended ceiling provides sound deadening qualities. The suspended ceiling was originally developed for acoustic problems. The efficiency in the design and technology of the suspended ceiling, for sound absorption, has greatly increased in recent years.
