Tail Beam

A tail beam, also known as tailpiece, is a beam that protrudes from the header of a wall. The beam is relatively short compared to other beams and is often used for decoration. A tail beam can be painted or finished with a stain and sealant. Some people paint the beam to match the ceiling, but many people choose to stain it to give it a natural look.

• Step 1: Sand down the tail beam and wipe off the dust.
• Step 2: Select a stain that matches the type of wood you have. Don't use a very dark stain if the beam is made from a light color.
• Step 3: Rub on the stain with a rag and wipe off the excess.
• Step 4: After the stain has dried, apply a coat of sealant to make the tail beam shiny and protect it from water or bugs.

Painting a Tail Beam

If you are painting a tail beam, chances are that you moved into a home and you want to hide the beam as much as possible. To paint the beam you will have to climb up a ladder and paint it with a bristled brush, but don't forget to lay a tarp down to protect the floors.
