Taking Care of a Mesh Screen Door

Being able to let a fresh breeze in and keep bugs out are qualities that home owners’ love in mesh screen doors. However, with that lovely breeze comes dust and other substances, and eventually the screen and door will need to be cleaned.

Depending on the circumstances, mesh screen doors are typically very easy to care for. Taking care to not scratch the finish is important, so using wire brushes or abrasive cleaners is not a good idea.

Ways to Clean a Mesh Screen Door

Sometimes a simple vacuum with a soft brush attachment is all that is needed to remove accumulated dust or cobwebs. However, if that isn’t enough, there are other options.

  • If the door is aluminum, use a mild detergent and soft brush to gently wipe away any stains or dirt. The door can be sprayed with a garden hose and allowed to air dry.
  • If the soiled areas are greasy from oils or sap, then use an ammonia-based cleaner. It is important to wipe screens from both sides to ensure that the substance is removed. Most times this can be rinsed with a garden hose and air dried.
  • Use a bristle brush on the screen to remove stubborn areas.
  • Household bleach will remove stains in most cases.

Mesh screen doors will last years with proper care. Over time the screen may stretch or be damaged, but can be easily replaced as necessary by removing the surrounding frame.
