Telling if Your Black Mold Is Toxic or Not

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Protective Gloves
  • Disposable Mask
  • Black Mold Testing Kit of your choice
  • Flashlight or light source

Is your black mold toxic ? The only way to know is to have it tested. You can call in a professional who will charge accordingly, or you can get a test kit from your local hardware store and test it yourself. Let's test it ourselves.

Step 1 - Preparation

Read all the instructions that come with your kit. There are several different types of testing kits on the market and they test differently. The end result is the same. You gather the sample and send it off to be tested at a laboratory. Wear your protective gloves and mask in case of contamination. We are going to perform the swab test; it does the least damage to your home.

Step 2 - Testing

With the swab test, you will swab an area that contains the black mold spores. Be sure to wear the protective gloves and mask. After you swab the area thoroughly, you will break the swab off into a test tube that has media in it. Seal it properly and send it off to the lab in the supplied mailer. You will get the results back from the laboratory.
