The Importance of Radon Gas Testing

by DoItYourself Staff

There are a number of gases that are very harmful to our health such as radon; therefore, it is important to conduct tests such as radon gas testing to determine whether or not your homes or work places are safe from these. Radon gas happens to be the second biggest cause of lung cancer deaths after smoking. There are a number of ways to protect yourself from radon gas, but first, you must familiarize yourself with the characteristics of this harmful gas.

What is Radon Gas?

Radon gas, as previously mentioned, is an odorless, colorless and tasteless gas. Radon gas results from a natural and radioactive breakdown composed of uranium found in water, rocks, as well as soil. This breakdown is released, and the radon gas is able to enter a structure such as a home or an office by using week points in the foundation of the structure. It seeps through holes, cracks or dents in poorly managed and poorly maintained foundations. Once the radon gas enters the structure, it is trapped inside and the people who reside or work there inhale this harmful gas. The bad thing about this gas is that it can enter and seep through practically any structure as long as there are entryways by which it can use to enter.

What are the Negative Effects of Radon Gas?

The radon gas that one inhales immediately becomes stuck in the lungs and lingers there, causing negative effects to take place in the lungs. The radioactive particles will continue to decay and will eventually release some energy, and this can lead to lung cancer. Not everyone will experience the immediate result of lung cancer after inhaling radon gas, but this disease will appear after a number of years being exposed to this harmful gas.

Testing for Radon Gas

Testing your home or your office for the presence of radon gas is an integral step to help prevent the harmful effects of this gas. Testing for radon gas is very simple. You can purchase a radon gas testing kit either online, or you can purchase one from a specialty store. The State Radon Office can also help you out with this and it also give out a list of professional testers that can visit your house and assist you with the process of radon gas testing. It would be best to have a house tested for radon gas prior to purchasing it for your family.

Lowering Radon Levels

Examine the results of your radon gas test. If the test shows that there is a high level or concentration of radon gas in your home or office, you can do several things to protect yourself from it. The solution is to install a vent pipe system equipped with a fan. This will help blow the radon gas out of your house from underneath, and allows it vent to the outside of your house where it cannot pose a threat to your health.
