Three Important Winter Driving Tips
Taking time to read a few winter driving tips can help prevent a lot of aggravation. Planning ahead will keep your car in good working order and ensure you are prepared if conditions leave you stuck when snow and ice hit.
Car Preparation
In the fall, have your car checked for things like bad tires, damaged belts and hoses, battery condition and anti freeze levels. You don't want a frozen engine or a blown hose that leaves you stranded in a snow storm without a service center nearby. Always keep at least a half a tank of gasoline in your car during the winter months.
Supplies
Always keep a box of storm supplies in the trunk of your car, especially if you have to drive long distances or in rural areas during the winter. A slide off could leave you stranded in your car. Keep a warm blanket, flashlight, gloves, hat, some food items such as granola bars, raisins and any other packaged food. Keep bottles of water also. Be sure your cell phone is charged and you have a car charger with you.
Driving
Slow down is the important tip. You may have your car under control but you don't know about the person next to you. Be aware that intersections can be very icy and dangerous. Don't travel unless you must.
