Tips for Choosing a Home Water Purification System

by DoItYourself Staff

Home water purification is fast becoming a primary concern of homeowners, mostly because of health and environmental issues Whether their concern from these homeowners is about the safety of their local drinking water, or whether it’s because of water taste, or because of environment concerns, homeowners with these concerns are purchasing more of these purification systems. And with the increasing demand for these systems, more companies are manufacturing and marketing these systems. The question is: which of these purification systems to choose? To help you answer this question, check out the information below.

Tip 1 – Look for a Multi-Purpose System

Carbon filters and reverse osmosis filters are the two types of home water purification systems that are available for use. When making a choice as to what type of system to purchase, you will want to consider a system that will remove both synthetic and organic contaminants from your drinking water. A carbon filter is the better choice for this, because it can filter both of these contaminants. Reverse osmosis filters, by contrast, are more efficient in removing harmful microorganisms but do not filter synthetic contaminants as well.

Tip 2 – Where to Place the Filter

Before purchasing your purification system you will need to decide whether you wish to have a whole house purification system or a point-of-use system, one that is installed  on your kitchen faucet. The whole house method will, of course, be more expensive, but it will allow you to feel more secure in knowing that even your bath water is free from contaminants or chemicals that could be harmful to your skin. What many homeowners do not realize is that even the contaminants in the water vapor from your shower water can be inhaled and could lead to potential health risks. if they are present in your shower water.

Tip 3  – Prepare a Checklist

To assist you in comparing prospective water purification systems you will be considering, prepare a comparison spreadsheet or checklist of the features you prefer in your purification system. Prioritize those features that are most important to you so that when you are evaluating prospective systems, you will be better able to make a well informed decision.

Tip 4 – Consider a System that doesn’t Eliminate Beneficial Minerals

Healthy water contains valuable minerals such as calcium, potassium, and magnesium. All of them can contribute to better health. When looking for a system, you will want to make sure that whichever system you choose is one that not only removes contaminants, but will not remove these healthful minerals.

Tip 5  – Go for Quality

For most of us, price is one of our highest priorities in determining what we buy. Because the health of you and your family are at risk when making this choice, it is important that when choosing a water purification system you make quality a high priority.

Tip 6  – Consider Environmentally Friendly Systems

If you are concerned about the health and welfare of your family, you are mostly likely concerned also about choosing a system that will be environmentally friendly. In this case, look for a system with an energy star label designating it as one that uses less energy.
