Tips for Cleaning Window Seat Cushions

by DoItYourself Staff

Window Seat Cushions get a lot of use and they quickly start to show the signs of their age. If you have children or pets the aging process might be accelerated. You will need to find a way to keep the cushions clean and also get rid of any stains and marks on them. Learning a few simple tips can help you remove stains from window seat cushions without risking damaging the fabric.

Tip 1 - Taking the Cushion Covers off

If your window seat cushions have removable covers then it's a good idea to remove them. By removing these covers you can treat the stain without risking getting the stuffing wet. If there aren't any zips or easy ways to remove the cover you will simply need to be careful.

Tip 2 - Upholstery Cleaner

If you can't take the covers off the cushions then the best method of cleaning stains is probably to use upholstery cleaner and a brush or cloth to work it into the fabric. You need to try and avoid making the cushion too wet when doing this. After finishing you need to leave the cushion somewhere warm so that it has chance to dry out completely before sitting on it again.

Tip 3 - Vacuum

If you have bigger stains then one of the best methods of getting them out is to use a specialist stain removal vacuum. These vacuums are capable of washing fabric and sucking the dust out.

Tip 4 - Washing

If the cover can be removed it makes it possible to wash the fabric, similar to washing clothing. This is one of the best ways of dealing with smelly or damp messes. Ripping the cover off before it has chance to stain will help get rid of the mark quickly and easily. Use normal detergent and wash according to the care instructions of the material.

If the cushion cover is too big or bulky to fit into a washing machine then you can wash it by hand in a sink or bathtub. This may take longer, but it is still possible to get most stains out. A bar of soap can also be used to help remove any stubborn stains.

Tip 5 - Cutting the Cushion

You need to make a cut which is big enough to take the foam out the inside of the cushion somewhere that you won't notice it. Alternatively, you can unpick one of the seams. Clean the cushion as normal and then replace the filling. The cut can be stitched up to hold in the foam stuffing.

Tip 6 - Protection

Putting a plastic bag around the foam of the cushion will prevent stains and smells being able to get absorbed by the foam. The plastic bag will also make it much easier to clean your cushion in the future.
