Tips for Repairing Your Bath Cabinet Mirror

by DoItYourself Staff

A bath cabinet mirror is part of our everyday routine. If the mirror starts to wear down or gets broken it should be corrected sooner rather than later. Here are some simple tips that will make the repair easier.

Re-silver

Old mirrors can wear down affecting the reflective quality. When this happens you may start to see dark spots in the reflective surface. If the mirror itself is in good condition, it may be more cost effective to just re-silver the mirror. You can purchase new mirror backing and cut it to size. You will place the new silver backing on the back of the mirror and use the included chemicals to allow the silver to deposit. This process does usually involve using caustic and dangerous chemicals, so be sure to follow all directions in the silver kit to stay safe.

Replacing

If the surface of the bathroom mirror has a lot of scratches or dings, adding new silver will just make these more noticeable. It's not usually too expensive to replace the mirror itself. You will need to remove the frame surrounding the mirror to do this. Most bath cabinet mirrors can be unhinged to take the mirror face off, then you can remove the frame. Take the old mirror to a home improvement store to have a new mirror cut to size.
