Tips for Testing Wireless Signal Strength

by DoItYourself Staff

Wireless signal strength determines the performance of the network connection. There are several methods you can use to check your signal strength. These methods are simple and easy, and cost nothing to use.

Testing the Operating System Program

Operating systems have a built in program which monitors the wireless status. Click on the control panel of your computer. From there, open the wireless network connection icon. The status window will indicate the signal strength. If a wireless connection is detected, the strength can range from very low to excellent.

Testing the Wireless Adapter

Some wireless hardware manufacturers provide the necessary software to monitor signal strength, along with the adapter. Check the software provided, in order to find the signal strength level of your wireless connection. These systems typically report the strength in percentages, ranging from 0 to 100.

Testing the WiFi Locator Device

WiFi locator devices detect the wireless signal strength of any access points that are in close proximity. These devices indicate signal strength, much like the monitoring devices provided with various operating systems. These devices do not measure the signal strength, but rather they predict the signal strength of a wireless connection. They indicate the prediction through a series of LED lights.
