Tips for Working with Flexible Electrical Conduit

by DoItYourself Staff

Flexible electrical conduit is very important if you are concerned about protecting household electrical wires from any kind of physical damage. The electric conduit also helps to stop any interference due to the current in the electrical wires. Rigid conduits were very hard to bend around corners, and the wirings in the corner are generally left unprotected. With flexible electrical conduit, that problem is permanently gone, and now you can protect the wiring completely. Using flexible electrical conduits, the wiring looks neat and the wires can be located and managed easily. The flexible electrical conduits come in various size and shape, so you can pick the right one that suits your criteria.

Cutting the Flexible Electrical Conduit

You must always cut the conduit properly so that it fits perfectly. It is best to cut it with a hacksaw and then use a file to smooth out the edges. To cut it properly, you must place it in the slot of a vise and then use the saw. By doing so, the cut will be straight, and the conduit will not suffer any damage while you are cutting it.

How Much Is Needed?

While installing the electric conduits, it is advised to keep the length of each section around 24 inches. If the length is larger, it becomes difficult to replace the entire section. Due to various physical stress, the conduit can get damaged, and if the length of the sections are short, then replacing the damaged section becomes easier and cheaper. The diameter of the flexible electrical conduit varies from half an inch to four inches. While purchasing the conduit, always buy a conduit that has a diameter a bit larger than what is required for your current wiring. This ensures you that you do not have to change or replace the conduit in case one or two extra wires are added later.

Outdoor Use

When the flexible conduits are used outdoor or they are used underground, it is better to take some extra precautions. In case of aluminium conduits, it is better to cover them with bitumen and, thus, protect the outer surface from getting corroded. If the material of the flexible conduit is plastic, then you must cover it with few layers of latex paint. This will prevent discoloration of the plastic. You must also keep the flexible electrical conduit away from any heat source. It should not be near any steam pipe, any kind of heating device, or a vent.

Running the Flexible Electrical Conduit

The biggest advantage of using flexible electrical conduit is you do not need a bender to bend the conduit for the corners. Before running wires through the conduits, make sure the power is turned off and the wires are disconnected from the source. For running the conduits on the wall, it is advised to use plastic anchors at an interval of 10 feet. You must also use a level while running the conduits on the wall. Once the conduits are in their final destination, secure them properly.
