Title

Title is a legal term for a group of rights, or bundled rights, concerning a piece of property. The holder of the title will have these rights over the property. Conveyance of the title document could be required before there can be a transfer of ownership in that property to another person.

Title is different from possession, since possession, or the actual holding of a piece of property, may not include holding the proper title for it. Alternately, a person can hold title and not have possession of the property. A person could have built on land where they thought they had title to, but if they don’t have title to that property, the may have no right to possess it. A person could have title to a car and not have the car yet.

Uses of a Title

Documents of title are commonly used in dealing with real estate, or motor vehicles, and sometimes with intangible property. This could be intellectual property – an idea or book or piece of music.
