Top 4 Must Have Electrical Supplies

by DoItYourself Staff

The proper electrical supplies are essential whenever you are handling electrical devices of any sort. There are a range of different tools used for different categories of electrical work. Popular tools such as screwdrivers, crimpers, saws, hammers, chisels, flashlights, drills, gloves, and protective goggles are commonly used while doing electrical works and repairs. Listed below are a few of the other important tools that are very helpful while doing electrical work.

Wire Stripper

This device is used for stripping the insulation from electric wires for installations and repairs. Manual and automatic wire strippers are available in the market.

  • Manual wire stripper: This is almost similar in appearance to a pair of scissors with a pair of opposing blades. The blades are rotated around the insulation by applying a slight pressure to cut through it. Then, the insulation is pulled off easily. Some wire strippers have grooves to suit various wire sizes. Those used specially for electric power wiring have special blades to neatly sever wire insulation.
  • Automatic wire strippers: These strippers grip the wire from one side while simultaneously cutting and stripping the insulation from the other. They are easy to use, but are suitable for certain sizes of wires only. When stripping the wire, take care to grip and pull it away from yourself to prevent injury.

Pliers

These tools are among the other important tools one ought to have. They come in various varieties.

  • Diagonal pliers: These pliers have no teeth and are used to cut smaller gauge wires and as gripping instruments for removing nail and staples.
  • Needle-nosed pliers: These are also known as long-nose pliers. They are available with or without side cutters and are used to do finer work in small and crowded electrical enclosures. Their long-nosed shape comes handy for reaching into even the most difficult cavities where your fingers cannot reach.
  • Lineman’s pliers: They are also known as combination pliers and are used to clasp small objects and also to cut and bend wires and cables. Their insulated handles reduce the risk of electric shock while working with live wires.

Multimeter

This tool is used for basic electrical testing and troubleshooting, a small battery-operated instrument called a multimeter is used. A trained electrician will be able to find the cause of any problem using a good multimeter. It comes in two types: digital and analog. They have an LCD display and are more accurate; hence, they are much more popular than the analog ones. Digital multimeters are used for testing the voltage, current, and resistance, which are necessary to diagnose an electrical problem. As multimeters come in handy for testing circuits, their resistance will affect the current flow through that circuit; hence, buy a multimeter that has good impedance (operating resistance).

Fish tape

Fish tape is also called a draw tape, a fish tape is made of a narrow band of spring steel and is used by electricians to route new wiring through the electrical conduit and walls. The wire that has to be guided into the walls is attached to the end of the fish tape and carefully manipulated through the confined spaces in wall cavities. Once it reaches the other end, the tape is pulled out.
