Topography is the mapping of the height and depth of land. A topography map can help you plan a hike or build a house. To make your own map you will need a piece of grid paper and a tape measure.
• Step 1: Measure out a space of land, like your yard, and draw it on your topography map. Have each foot represent one of the cubes to make the project easier.
• Step 2: Roughly draw out where there are hills and depressions. You can use your tape measure to determine where they start.
• Step 3: On a real topography map you would be able to get accurate measurements for the exact height above sea level, to make the project easier just make the average land height equal 0.
Indicate the hills and depressions by labeling them with the positive or negative height. You can add in extra lines around very high hills and indicate the higher height on these lines.
Adding Objects to Your Topography Map
Topography maps also depict object or monuments on them. You can draw in objects like trees, gardens, and buildings to make your map more accurate. Make sure you measure each one out so that is the correct size on your map.
