Transform an Old Bed Pillow into a Brand New Throw

by DoItYourself Staff

what you'll need

  • Old pillow
  • 1/2 to 1 yard fabric
  • Iron
  • "No sew" tape
  • Stick pins
  • Scissors
  • Cloth measuring tape
  • Decorative touches such as ribbons or buttons

Any old bed pillow you have can be easily turned in to a great new throw pillow without a lot of effort. Even someone with no sewing experience can create their own decorative pillow. You don't even need a sewing machine to do this! Here are the simple steps to making a new pillow out of an old one.

Step 1 - Prepare the Fabric

You will want to ensure that the fabric you have purchased is clean and wrinkle free. Many people like to wash and dry the fabric before they use it. Either way, you will need to make sure you iron the fabric out so you won't have to contend with wrinkled or uneven fabric. It's probably also a good idea to launder the old bed pillow and make sure it's completely dry since you will be reusing this material.

Step 2 - Measure and Cut the Fabric

With a freshly ironed piece of fabric, lay it out and measure it.

  • Add 2 inches above and beyond the actual size you want for the pillow. For example, if you are making an 8 inch throw pillow, then you will need to make sure you cut 2 pieces that measure 10 inches.
  • Lay the pieces on top of each other with the printed size facing the middle.
  • Measure out 1/2 inch from the edge of the fabric and place stick pins here to hold the fabric in place. Make sure the pins are in the right place! This will also serve as your measurement guideline.

Step 3 - 'Sew' it Together

  • Place your "no sew" tape along the lines where your pins are.
  • Use a warm (not hot!) iron to fuse the tape to the fabric.
  • Do this all the way around, leaving a two inch space on one side for the stuffing.
  • Once you get the fusion all around, you will use the gap you left to flip the pillow inside out so the pattern is on the outside.

Step 4 - Stuff It

You can now take your old bed pillow and use this material to stuff the new throw pillow. If the throw pillow is large enough you can just stuff the entire pillow in to the cover. If not, just cut the old pillow so you can recycle the material.

Step 5 - Finish it Up

Now that the pillow is stuffed you can use the "no sew" tape to seal the opening. Add any ribbon or buttons or other decorations you have picked for your pillow.
