Troubleshooting Ceiling Mount Light Fixtures

by DoItYourself Staff

Ceiling mount light fixtures are an original way to customize and update your home interior. Nowadays there are a lot of different models to choose from, from a plain classic style, to a more extravagant modern ones. Also, ceiling mount light fixtures are a easy way to light up a dark room or a dark corridor. Obviously the price varies from one style to another, but normally, they aren’t that expensive. Another important thing worth mentioning is that these types of light fixture require some maintenance from time to time mainly because of dust.

Hanging Bolts

It’s a good idea that every so often you check the bolts on the base of the light fixture. Don’t worry, the bolts are designed to hold for many years, but precaution is better; thus, keep that in mind.

Flickering Light Bulbs and Wirings

If the light bulbs constantly burn much faster than they are supposed to, then you should take some initiative and check the wirings. The latter isn’t a tough job to do and requires only a minimum subject knowledge of electronics.

The first thing to do is to check whether the maximum wattage of the bulb you are inserting in the ceiling mount light fixture is the appropriate wattage for that fixture. If you realize that the bulb is of the wrong wattage, then most probably the problem can be fixed easily. If the latter is not the case, then you will need to unscrew the ceiling mount and check the wire connections. First you have to cut off the main power supply and wear protective clothing. Check that all of the wires are inserted accordingly, that is, the neutral, earth and live wire, and check whether there are any burnt china joint connectors. If so, then all you have to do is to replace the faulty parts (if you think you are not up to the task then seek professional help). Once you are done, re-screw all of the connections, turn on the power supply, and check whether the problem is fixed. One last thing is to make sure that none of the wires are crippled, for example, between the actual mount and the ceiling.

Light Switch

A common problem that occurs is a faulty light switch. If all of the connections of the ceiling mount fixture are in place, then it’s probably the light switch. Follow the same procedure, that is, check that all of the electronic connections are in place.

Dusting

Due to the considerable amount of dust being trapped in such light fixtures, it would be a great idea to clean them from the inside from time to time, preferably at least once or twice a year. This will ensure that all of the connections are dust-free since dust or grime can sometimes cause some minor faults.

Testing

A handy tool to use in such circumstances is a tester, which is a screw driver with electronic flow detection capabilities. A tester is a cheap and easy tools to check whether there is any electricity flowing in the light fixture circuit because if not, then there is a wiring problem.

Always remember to use safety equipment and proper clothing when engaging in lighting jobs.
