Troubleshooting Common Wireless USB Adapter Problems

by DoItYourself Staff

Wireless USB adapter problems can be attributed to a number of different causes. Adapters are commonly used as a way of creating wireless networks. The efficiency and performance of adapters can vary greatly, but the majority of problems are the same. In general, they are easy to figure out and even easier to fix.

General Checks

The first thing you should always do is perform general checks on your electronic equipment. Check that the USB adapter is fitted into the USB port properly and is switched on. Most will have a blue light which will tell you if it's active or not. Also, check the wires of your main connection. If these wires are not plugged in or have been fitted incorrectly, your USB adapter will not have anything to pick up a signal from.

Drivers

Problems can arise because the drivers needed to run the adapter have not been installed. You should be prompted to install them when you plug the adapter into the USB port. Drivers can be downloaded from manufacturer websites. If you do not have the right driver, the adapter will have limited functionality or it won't work at all. You also need to make sure you take the adapter out correctly each time. A driver will be needed to ensure there is no software damage when you do this.

Signal Strength

Low signal strength can cause your adapter to work inefficiently. If your internet connection frequently appears and disappears, this is likely to be the problem. Make sure the antenna is up on your main internet hub. Also, make sure there are no other electrical devices near the main hub which could be soaking up power. If you are still having adapter problems, change the channel on your computer which the adapter has been using.

Hub Location

It may be the case that your internet hub is simply in the wrong location for your wireless USB adapter to be capable of forming a strong signal and a reliable link. Move the hub so it is clear of any immediate obstructions. Also, consider changing the position of the antenna from horizontal to vertical to see if it makes any difference.

USB Antenna

If you have played around with moving the hub, but the performance of your wireless USB adapter is still poor, the problem is probably with the adapter itself. You can fix this by changing the antenna on the usb adapter. Most brands come with antennas which simply click on and off on the USB stick. By changing the antenna setting, the adapter should be working as good as new. If it still doesn't work, you will most likely need a new adapter.

Repeaters

Repeaters are a very good way of enhancing the signal in any wireless network. They are also relatively cost-effective. Buy one and install it into the middle of your current network. Your adapter should be able to immediately pick up a much stronger signal and the problem will be fixed. The repeater will regenerate a brand new signal halfway along a network.
