Troubleshooting Your Digital Weight Scale

by DoItYourself Staff

A digital weight scale is more accurate than the old fashioned needle scales. It is more sensitive to changes and movement. You will have to stand correctly on the scale to get an accurate reading. Just as with any type of calculating machinery, the scale needs to be calibrated. If your weight is off and you haven't gained or lost, you need to check out the calibration of the scale and several other options that can be causing the problems. In this article we are going to give you a few of those options.

Setting the Scale

On the scale there should be an adjustment device of some sort, a knob or slide, usually under the front part where you can see the weight as you adjust. You need to zero the scale. Turn the scale on and see what it reads. If it is over or under then set it to precisely zero. This should alleviate any problems.

Using a Known Weight

To test the scale further, weigh a known weight, something that has been weighed and is precise. A one-pound free weight will work. Weigh it on the scale and see if it is over or under. Keep weighing a few more objects of known weight. This will give you an idea of the accuracy of this scale.

Leveling the Scale

If the scale is not level it will off-balance, causing an incorrect weight. Make sure that it is sitting on a level surface. Also turn the scale over from time to time and clean the bottom. Make sure the little feet are all on and that they are even. Make sure the shipping plate has been taken off the bottom if there is one there. Some models have one on them when shipping to avoid damage.

Checking for Electronic Trouble

If your scale is electric, make sure the plug is in correctly. If there is a cable connecting from the body to the reader, make sure it is connected correctly.

Also check the fuse, because if there is no display the fuse could be blown.

If it is battery powered make sure you have a fresh battery to install. Check it again. A low battery will give an off reading. A dead battery will give no reading. The battery terminals can sometimes be bent where they are not making sufficient contact with the batteries. check them to make sure you are getting the proper connection.

If you are showing a partial LCD reading the connector may be loose. Pushing on the LCD may have the desired effect; if not, open the back and make sure it is connected. Don't drop or bang the scale around. This can cause damage to the equipment inside and cause inaccurate readings. Make sure you store your scale where it doesn't get wet. An ERR reading means it either needs to be replaced or sent back to the factory for repair.
