Types Of Blenders

by DoItYourself Staff

Blenders come in different varieties including pitcher blenders, immersion blenders and hand-powered blenders. Which one you choose depends on the how you plan to use it and with what foods. While food prep is always the task, chopping and blending pine nuts and basil for pesto is a different job than pureeing soup, which may just require an immersion blender.

Base and Pitcher Blender

Because it is the most versatile, the base and pitcher blender is the most common one you find in homes today. They have a base that houses the motor and drive shaft, with a pitcher-type container that has the rotary blades that are powered by the base. You pour in your ingredients and choose among the many different settings to blend, chop, puree and other food prep functions.

Immersion Blenders

An immersion blender is exactly what the name implies. It is a hand-held blender that looks like a stick with blades on the bottom. By immersing the unit directly into the liquid you can blend directly in a serving bowl, cup or mug.

Hand-Powered Blender

For delicate blending jobs, like creams, a hand-powered blender is the best choice. With a hand-crank on the top and spinning utensils on the bottom, this type of blender is quite inexpensive, easy to use and has been around for ages.
