Types Of Porch Lights

by DoItYourself Staff

In term of style and function there are many different kinds of porch lights to choose from on the market today. When choosing exterior porch lights, select a fixture that will not only provide light in the evening, but will also enhance the  look of  your home during daylight hours.

Flush Mounted

Flush mounted porch lights often have the appearance of sconces, similar to interior light sconce fixtures. These lights are available in a full variety of shape, styles, sizes and finishes to complement any decorative style. Flush mounted porch light fixtures are often wired so that they are controlled from interior light switches.

Hanging Lights

Similar to interior chandeliers, hanging porch lights usually are installed so that they hang from the porch ceiling and cast light over the front door. These light fixtures may hang from a single center drop or may have several decorative chains that connect them to the ceiling. Frequently, hanging porch lights can be purchased that complement other exterior light fixtures installed as part of the home landscaping.

Security Lights

Security porch lights have a motion-detection sensor that recognizes when visitors approach the porch entrance and turns the lights on. Not only does this provide illumination for visitors as they walk toward the porch, but also alerts individuals inside the house to the presence of visitors, wanted or unwanted.
