Understanding A Home Security System Door Sensor

by DoItYourself Staff

Door sensors are an important part of a home security system. You can place them on any door that opens to the outside, to alert you to a security breach. You can also add one to a locked interior door, like a home office, to protect valuables and documents. Read on to understand how door sensors function, and why they are an important part of alarm systems for home security.

Door Sensor Format

A door sensor is a small magnetized strip attached to the door, usually near the latch. It creates a closed circuit with a sensor attached to the door frame.

How the Door Sensor Alarm Functions

The wired or wireless electric current that runs through the door sensor creates the closed circuit when the door is closed. When an intruder forces open the door, the electrical circuit is broken, activating the alarm. This will usually discourage the intruder. Many alarm systems alert both the security company and the police when the alarm is triggered.

Places to Use Door Sensors

Any vulnerable entry point, whether a door or window, should have a magnetic sensor. Put one on the door leading directly from the garage into the house, a popular entry point for intruders.
