Understanding Flood Damage Insurance

by DoItYourself Staff

Flood damage insurance is a very important insurance policy for a homeowner to have. Flood damage insurance is designed to help you get past the problems that are associated with a flood. Here are the basics of flood damage insurance and how it works for you as a homeowner.

Flood Damage Insurance

Flood damage insurance is an insurance policy that you buy separate from your homeowners policy on your home. This policy is specifically designed to cover any damage that is caused as a result of a flood from the outside of your home. Any water damage that is caused from the inside of your home such as a broken pipe, would be covered by your homeowners insurance. However, many homeowners are not covered in a result of a flood damaging their home. This is where flood insurance comes in to play.

How to Purchase

Many homeowners insurance companies do not offer flood insurance. Therefore, you may have to look elsewhere to find a suitable policy for your home. There are several companies that specialize in flood insurance and you may also be able to purchase it from The National Flood Insurance Program. This is a government program that sells flood insurance directly to the public.
