Epoxy paint is applied to flooring in residential applications to create a non-skid surface. Epoxy is made through the combination of chemicals known as resins and hardeners. This combination creates a coating that provides an excellent surface covering for walkways, patio decks and garage floors. An epoxy coat kit will include non-skid chips that help to further protect the surface and reduce the possibility of slip and fall accidents.
This article will discuss how to use spiked shoes such as baseball cleats to apply the epoxy paint non-skid chips to a floor surface such as a garage.
Step 1: Purchase Materials for Epoxy Paint Application
Go to a paint or hardware store or a home improvement center and purchase an epoxy coat kit that contains epoxy paint and epoxy paint chips. The epoxy paint chips are essential because they are what will be applied to the flooring with the spiked baseball shoes.
Step 2: Apply a Concrete Etching Solution to the Garage Floor
You will need to apply a concrete etching solution to the garage floor. Begin by washing the floor with soap and water. With the suds still on the floor, apply the etching solution throughout the entire garage floor. Once the etching solution has been placed on the floor, work it into the floor using a stiff brush.
After you work the etching solution into the garage floor, dry the floor with a mop to remove the water and soap residue. Use several floor fans to dry the garage floor completely before you move to the next step in the process.
Step 3: Put the Epoxy Paint on the Garage Floor
Mix the epoxy paint and using either a paint brush or roller, apply the epoxy paint to the garage floor. A roller will give you the best coverage and is better to use than a paint brush; it will also cut down on the amount of bending that you need to when applying the epoxy paint.
Work in a well ventilated area and wear a mask and gloves when applying the epoxy paint to the garage floor.
Step 4: Put the Epoxy Paint Chips on the Garage Floor
Once you have completed the painting process, put on a pair of spiked shoes, such as baseball spikes. Walking across the freshly painted floor spread the epoxy paint chips. As you spread them on the epoxy painted floor, walk over the chips in order to adhere them to the painted surface.
Step 5: Apply the Clear Coat Sealant
After you have applied the chips with the spiked shoes, take them off and allow the floor to dry. Once the floor dries, add 2 coats of the epoxy clear coat. This will act as a sealant.
