The reason for using an electrical circuit tracer is to simplify the time-consuming and incredibly frustrating task of finding out which wires connect a faulty outlet to the main source of power. Tracing problem wiring using this device is a boon to the average home handyman with limited or no experience with common household wiring. This guide will explain briefly how to use an electrical circuit tester for those new to the tool.

Step 1 – Identify the Components and Install

Once you have identified the components, the process is incredibly simple. Plug the transmitter into any malfunctioning electrical outlet in the house.

Step 2 – Check at the Breaker Box

At the distribution board or breaker box as it is commonly known, check each wire arriving at the circuit breaker or fuse using the hand held receiver unit. Bringing the receiver close to the problem wiring will alert the user by means of an audible sound, usually a buzz or a bright light—a light emitting diode.

Step 3 – Rectifying the Problem

Now that you have identified the faulty outlet and its power source, you can shut it off so that it stops tripping the rest of your outlets, and repair it.
