Using an Ergonomic Computer Keyboard Properly

An ergonomic computer keyboard can improve the health a person who spends a large amount of time at the computer. However, an ergonomic keyboard must be used properly to attain its ergonomic benefits. Ergonomic computer keyboards are no better than standard keyboards if they are used improperly.

Test Drive

Before purchasing an ergonomic computer keyboard, it is essential that you test the keyboard by sitting at a chair and desk similar to your home chair and desk. Though an in-store test drive cannot duplicate the results of using the keyboard over the course of several weeks or months, it will give you clues as to whether the keyboard will work for you. When the keyboard is placed directly in front of you, your wrists should be straight and in line with your arms, your elbows should remain close to your body, and your shoulders should be relaxed.

Laptop Ergonomics
If your computing needs cause you to use a laptop computer on a regular basis, you can find products that make your laptop experience ergonomic. These include laptop desks which provide a place for an external mouse, thus reducing wrist strain, or a lift that reduces neck strain by lifting the screen of the laptop above the keyboard and mouse and closer to your eye level.

Furniture
The benefits derived from an ergonomic computer keyboard can be completely eliminated if it is used along with a desk, chair, and other computer accessories that are not also ergonomic. Surround your ergonomic keyboard with an ergonomic chair, an ergonomic desk, an ergonomic mouse for the computer, and an ergonomic computer monitor.

Comfort
While using your ergonomic computer keyboard, your muscles should be relaxed and comfortable at all times. When your muscles begin to cramp or tense, you should take a break from the computer. If your muscles do not feel comfortable when you first sit down, you should consider exchanging your ergonomic computer keyboard for a different keyboard. Since every body is unique, an ergonomic computer keyboard that works for one person may not work for you.

Find the Right Height
When you are designing your computer workplace, you should incorporate your height versus the height of the desk, chair, and keyboard, as well as the distance between the chair and the keyboard. When you are sitting at your desk, your back should be straight but relaxed. When your hands are placed on the keyboard, your shoulders should be relaxed and your elbows bent at a 90 degree angle. Your wrists should be relaxed and your fingers placed on the keys without putting strain on your muscles.
