Using the Latest Battery Technology in Your Home

by DoItYourself Staff

Battery technology has been rapidly improving for the last few decades. What started out as primitive sources of power are now very high tech and advanced. Alkaline batteries, the mainstay for many years, have now given way to a whole new breed of different battery technology. Today's battery technology is full of longer lasting, rechargeable batteries that can power many of our household gadgets and appliances.

Hybrios Battery Technology

One of the newest forms of battery technology to be introduced to consumers is the Hybrios battery. This is a rechargeable battery that can be used instantly and charges quickly. While they will lose their charge a little faster than other batteries of this type, they will hold their charge for a long period of time. If you are one that does not use your batteries all the time, you do not have to worry about them dieing too quickly. This type of battery is the best choice for items that you do not use all the time. Flashlights are a great example.

Lithium-Ion Battery Technology

This is another type of rechargeable battery in which the lithium ions move from the negative electrode to the positive electrode during discharge. Depending on the material that is used for the anode, cathode and electrolytes, there can be drastic differences in voltage, life, capacity, and even the safe use of the Lithium-Ion battery technology. Lithium-Ion batteries should not be confused with regular lithium batteries, which are the primary batteries of an item. Lithium-ion batteries are the small secondary batteries that usually run the internal workings in electronic devices. While the device is off, it is still running on the Lithium-ion battery for date, clock, and preference settings. This type of battery technology is common in digital cameras, laptop computers, and cell phones.

CR Battery Technology

The CR battery, which stands for cylindrical lithium manganese dioxide battery, is a new Maxel battery that is highly touted for its reliability and high capacity. Because of the way that it is manufactured, the battery is one of the more reliable on the market. It has a unique winding method that effectively utilizes positive and negative electrodes. This gives the battery its high capacity.

However, there is one drawback to this type of battery technology: it is not commonly sold on the open market. When the electronic device is manufactured, the CR battery is already installed in the electronic device. This makes it hard for the consumer to buy replacement batteries, but with the long life of the battery itself, this is a small point. CR battery technology is most often seen in industrial and security products. For the home setting this is security alarms, fire alarms, electronic meters that handle gas, electric, and water readings, and memory backup for computers.

Battery technology is something that continues to evolve. What was once something that would only last for a few uses, can now last much longer and then be recharged. This means that you need to buy fewer batteries, while still being able to enjoy uninterrupted use.
