Washer Dryer: Top Load Basics
Washer dryer top load combos remain one of the most popular styles of machines available. They are inexpensive, get the job done, and are familiar to all of us. Here are some of the basics regarding top load machines.
Combo Expenses
While a brand new top load washer dryer combo averages anywhere from $500 to $800, the front load styles can be several hundred more than that. The top load style machines are usually easier to maintain as well. Other styles can be more costly since the parts are harder to find and more expensive.
Agitators
Top load washing machines rely on an agitator to swish the clothing and water around to clean them thoroughly. This can be harsh on delicates and many types of clothing. Many newer styles of top load machines will have a delicate setting that will not use the agitator. If you are looking to purchase a new combo and this is an issue, look for ones that have this setting.
Ergonomics
Top load sets are much easier on the knees and legs than front load combos. With a top loading machine you won’t have to bend and kneel to get laundry in and out of the machines. If the machine are stacked though you may still have to bend to get to the washer since it’s always placed on bottom.
Adding Last Minute Items
When you realize you’ve forgotten to toss in a pair of pants that really need to get done, you can just open the lid and toss them in with a top load washing machine. This may not sound like a big deal, but if you use a front loaded machine this is impossible since the doors lock once the machine starts.
Detergent Options
A top loaded machine will take just about any kind of laundry detergent. You can choose to use cheaper detergents if you wish. Other machine types may require special detergents, like HE detergents that have a low sudsing action. These detergents can be quite a bit more expensive than standard laundry soaps, and you won’t have as many choices to choose from.
Energy Conservation
If you are concerned about conserving energy then you will want to look for a top load machine combo that carries the Energy Star label. Front load machines are naturally more efficient because of the way they are designed. But you can find machines that are top load models that still offer conservation. If water conservation is an issue, then make sure you are finding machines that offer multiple water level settings. This way you won’t have to completely fill the bin with water if you only have a small load.
