Water Repellant

by DoItYourself Staff

Every year you should add water repellant to your tents and motorcycle bags. The water repellant will allow for your bags to keep your items dry and your tent to keep you dry. Before the start of the summer season every year you should follow these steps to properly water proof your items.

• Start by removing any loose dirt that may be on them. This will allow for a better cleaning.
• Before you actually clean your items you will want to wipe them down. If the objects are leather you may not want to apply water but there are chemicals out there for proper cleaning and water proofing of them.
• Next you will want to wash your tent. When washing your tent you never want to use laundry detergent. Use a non-detergent cleaner sold at camping stores. Make sure you fully rinse the tent off so there’s no leftover residue.
• Finally, before you dry your tent you will want to apply water repellant.

Why you Should Apply Water Repellant Every Year

In most cases the water repellant gets worn down over the course of a year. If you use your tent or bags more often, and they see more rain, than you should add water repellant twice a year to keep them from leaking.
