Wax can be obtained organically as a secretion from some insects (e.g. beeswax) or inorganically from fractional distillation of petroleum or crude oil. Shellac is a popular variety of naturally produced wax. Shellac is a resin based wax that is marketed as dry flecks. This is then diluted in alcohol till it forms a syrupy consistency. This is then used to give a final glossy coat to any wooden surface.
Uses for Wax
• Wax serves as a robust surface coating that also acts as an odor neutralizer.
• Wax is an excellent waterproofing agent. It is therefore of immense use to coat leather and canvas fabric. This can then be used to build temporary outdoor shelters like tents. Wax also acts as a water repellent in indoor applications.
• Wax has a natural sheen to it and serves as a polishing agent for wooden furniture. Furniture polished with wax cannot be stained easily as the porosity of wax is extremely low.
