What Are Acoustic Ceiling Tiles?

by DoItYourself Staff

Acoustic ceiling tiles are made from a variety of fibrous materials such as wood, cork or foam that are sound absorbing. Today there are many styles, colors and design choices that were not available 40 years ago. The myth about acoustic ceiling tiles is that they are cheap looking. They still may be inexpensive as a ceiling type, but today’s technology provides for much better appearance than the familiar discount drop ceilings of the past.

All Kinds of Styles

Modern acoustic ceiling tiles are fissured, imitating a variety of different material types like stone, fabric or stucco, and can imitate painted textures like swirls and pebbled. Edge treatments can also be creative with beveled treatments, or a seamless look can be achieved through an interlocking application system. This can also be used for pattern creations.

Quick Ceiling

A great aspect about an acoustic tile ceiling is the ease of installation at a relatively quick pace. When installing a suspended grid for drop-in tiles, you can hide unsightly plumbing, duct work and wiring. However, use of interlocking acoustic ceiling tiles would act much like a solid ceiling, since tiles would need to be separated to gain access between the suspended ceiling and the solid one above it.

Many online retailers display a wide variety of styles and colors from which you could choose.
