What are some safety tips to remember when building an outdoor spiral staircase?

by DoItYourself Staff

Creating a spiral staircase outdoors poses its own issues versus building one inside. If you're welding, it should be carried out in a well-ventilated area. However, the conditions outside are not as easy to control as those indoors, therefore it is important to not build on an extremely windy day, especially if you are welding the structure. Also, make sure that the spiral staircase is not violating any building codes or fire safety codes, and it is advisable to check with the authorities before construction to avoid wasting time and money. Building codes are for your own safety. For example, the railings might have to be a certain width apart to prevent children from squeezing through. Height, width, and anchoring requirements may also apply.
