MDF board, or medium density fiberboard, is the ideal material to use for the platform part of a platform bed frame. It is available in large sheets, and you may even be able to purchase a sheet the exact size of the mattress, so you won't have to do any cutting or piecing of wood. MDF board isn't as expensive as plywood, or woods like oak or maple, and can be stained or painted any color you desire. It is dense and heavy, compared to boards of comparable strengths, so it can be hard to work with and handle.
