What are the different types of exterior door molding?

There has been a revolution in exterior door molding materials. For the most part, door molding still remains traditional wood, however, as needs have changed, so have the woods from hardwoods like oak to softwoods like pine. There have also been advances in aluminum and vinyl trims, spurred by the residing of many homes. You will also find that styrofoam has made great advances, as it is easy to work with, and provides an even paint surface. The same is true of plastic molding, which is not only color imprinted, but is easy to work with using traditional tools. Plastic is somewhat more durable than styrofoam, which does require more care at installation.
