What can cause a leak in my chimney flashing?

by DoItYourself Staff

Chimney flashing is an important part of the installation of a roof. Flashing that is improperly installed can cause leaks that can ruin your ceilings and rot framing of the house. When properly installed, flashing is woven in and out the shingles to create a more watertight seal. It can be difficult to apply flashing to the corner areas of a chimney, and improper installation can cause leaks. In addition to proper installation, there should be caulking along all the edges of the flashing to seal out leaks. Many times, leaks can be solved simply by replacing the caulking.
