What causes a concrete pool deck to crack?

by DoItYourself Staff

There are a number of reasons that a concrete pool deck could crack. Most often, it is because the concrete expands and contracts during temperature changes. If there are not enough expansion joints in the concrete, it will lead to cracking somewhere in the deck.

In some cases of cracking, the substrate under the concrete was not prepared properly. When this happens, the concrete can sometimes settle down into the ground and lead to cracking. Other times, the contractors that laid the concrete did not use the appropriate amount of water in the mix.
