What Causes Dishwasher Odor?

by DoItYourself Staff

Common causes of dishwasher odor include dirty and unwashed dishes that are left for days and food particles become trapped beneath the dishwasher drain. Mold and mildew formation is another culprit.

Trapped Food Particles

Check for trapped food fragments underneath your dishwasher. You should see a strainer that filters soap and food items. If you do find food, this may be the reason for the odor. Remove the strainer then get rid of the trapped food. Afterwards, pour a mixture of white vinegar and baking soda into the strainer to eliminate the smell. The vinegar will eliminate the bacterial growth causing the fowl odor. This mixture will cause a foaming effect as you pour the solution into the strainer. Run the dishwasher once the bubbling stops, on a high temperature then allow it to dry.

Molds and Mildew

Molds and mildew usually forms at the bottom of the dishwasher and around the door seal. Do not leave your dishwasher wet and always run it for the recommended length of time to dry completely. To remedy this, run a full cycle without the dishes. You can use 3 to 4 tbsp. baking soda with the cleansing solution. Allow it to dry completely.

It is always best to pre-wash your dishes first before putting them into the dishwasher to prevent food buildup.
