What do I need to know before removing load bearing walls?

by DoItYourself Staff

Removing load-bearing walls is a very serious project. You must keep in mind the weight that the wall in question bears. You will need to check with the building codes in your area to make sure you comply with them before you remove any wall. You also need to know that when you remove a load-bearing wall, you will have to replace it with another support element, such as a microlam beam or a steel girder, which may protrude lower than the height of the ceiling. This may not look aesthetically pleasing, however, it is essential to have a strong support structure in place to replace the load-bearing wall(s).
