What Does Transmission Fluid do?

by DoItYourself Staff

Transmission fluid is high utility oil used in vehicles' and facilities' valve operation, gear lubrication, and other utilities. In order to distinguish it from other oils, the transmission fluid is generally red or green in color. It is slippery in nature and is odorless. A rule of the thumb is to check the vehicles transmission fluid every month to avoid any malfunction. Read on to find out more about its function.

Hydraulic Power

A transmission fluid mainly supplies hydraulic power. This helps perform basic functions, like changing the gear, transmission engagement, transmission disengagement and also down shifting. Automatic transmission uses the transmission fluid to operate the components.

Lubrication

Another key function of a transmission fluid is that it has the ability to lubricate the gears and the bands of the transmission. This put less strain on the system and in turn helps in keeping the temperature low. All this contributes to a longer shelf life of a transmission. The transmission fluid does not lead to too much wastage, even when not in use. It gets collected in the transmission pan when the vehicle is not in motion.
