What finishes are safe for a wood cutting board?

by DoItYourself Staff

When finishing a wood cutting board, it's important to use the right medium. Otherwise, the lifespan of the kitchen accessory could be cut short. A proper finish keeps the cutting board from becoming too brittle with time, which can lead to cracking or splitting. A cutting board should be refinished perhaps 2 or 3 times a year to maintain it. There are 2 primary types of finish:

  • Rubbing the board with mineral or vegetable oil so that it fully penetrates the wood particles
  • Create a boiled-down mixture of mineral oil and paraffin wax to coat the cutting board, apply to the cutting board, scrape off the excess wax and buff it to achieve a nice shine
