What Is a Fish Scaler?
A fish scaler is a device designed to minimize the tedious work of removing the scales from fish before cooking. Through a variety of means the scales are pulled out from the fishes skin without harming the flesh of the animal. By using a scaler, the fish can be more cleanly descaled, removing frustration and excess time.
Electronic
Electronic fish scalers use vibrating or rotating heads to grab and lift the scales from the fishes skin. Often no blades are used making this a safer alternative for many families with young children participating in the fishing.
Handheld
Handheld fish scalers are the simplest and most cost effective device. The jagged blade is dragged from the fishes tail to the head in short jerky motions. The blade grabs the scales and pulls them from the skin of the fish. Often multiple passes are necessary, and rinsing between each can help to remove any scale debris.
Commercial
Commercial fish scalers use large drums to tumble the fish and remove the scales. The sides of the drum are rough and designed to pull the scales from the fish as they are rotated around. In this way multiple fish can be descaled at once, but care must be taken to not damage the fish.
